Shapewear Is Still In Style

Gone is the day of the girdle and the claustrophobic corset, but shapewear is still in style and, thankfully, much more comfortable.

Since the beginning of time, women have been utilizing shapewear to cinch their waists and smooth their curves. A friend asked me to recommend shapewear that won’t roll so I researched the best, most recommended shapewear by industry experts — aka, fashion editors and stylists — and pared down a list for you. I’ll also tell you about my personal fav’s and, of course, some shapewear shopping tips. Read on to find your favorite shapewear.

Shapewear is Everywhere

Celebrities wear shapewear to keep their curves contoured and tummy tucked, and not just on the red carpet. You can see several celebrities proudly flaunting their favorites on social media as featured in the April 27, 2021 issue of People Magazine’s article, Stars Who Love Their SPANX (and Aren’t Afraid to Show It).

In fact, some celeb’s admit to wearing more than one pair at a time! It never occurred to me to layer but, apparently, it’s a thing — I learn so much when I research items for my blog. You can read about it yourself in the Jan 2017 issue of Marie Claire. It may be an old issue but my guess is the layering continues, and I might need to try it.

Shapewear is for everyone, not just celebrities. Many styles are designed for every day sculpting and comfort. In fact, I’m going to let you in on a little secret, and this is more function than fashion: I always wear shapewear shorts when I wear a dress. Not always for the sculpting or contouring (although, that is a value-add), but so my thighs don’t touch. I wish I had a thigh-gap but, alas, I was not blessed with one and I hate, yes hate, the way it feels when my thighs are touching, especially in the summer. Since no one wears pantyhose anymore, shapewear shorts are my workaround.

Shapewear Shopping Tips

I am no stranger to shapewear. I wear it under dresses, jumpsuits and sometimes slacks. In my opinion, good shapewear is totally worth the investment.

There are dozens of brands and countless styles to contour your “problem” areas. Since no one brand will work best for everyone, the best advice I can give you when shopping for shapewear is:

  • Shop with a specific garment in mind take it with you to the store so you can try on several styles of shapewear with that garment. If you prefer to shop online try on at home, make sure everything you buy is returnable. In my experience, Amazon large department stores usually have the most variety to choose from as well as the best return policies.
  • Look for styles that will work best under whatever garment you plan to wear your shapewear with are designed to target your troubled spots. For instance, if you’re wearing a form fitting dress want to smooth your back and tummy, you should probably look for high-waisted shorts or maybe a bodysuit would serve you better.
  • Sample shapewear by a variety of designers, every brand is cut a little differently.
  • Try different sizes. Shapewear is supposed to fit snugly, like a second skin. It should fit tight enough hold you in but you should still be able to breathe. Improper fit can be one reason for rolling — it might be too big or too small — don’t be afraid to try another size.
  • If you’re buying shapewear with short shorts, try to find ones with a non-slip silicone lining in the waistband around the inside of the leg openings. It’s less important with longer shorts that are less likely to roll.
  • When you try the shapewear on with your garment, check that you can’t see any lines, lumps or bumps where the shapewear ends. If you try on shorts that sit at your waist (vs. high-waisted), be sure they don’t give you a muffin-top. If they do, try a pair of high-waisted shorts, a bodysuit or a slip.
  • Don’t be self-conscious about wearing two or more shapewear garments to achieve the look and shape you want. That is, feel free to wear shapewear shorts a shaping tank instead of a bodysuit or slip. As long as you’re comfortable feel gorgeous in your garment, that’s all that matters.
  • Lastly, here is my most important tip — I kid you not — sit, squat, bend, walk.
    • If you’re trying on shorts or a slip; sit, squat, do some leg lifts, pretend to climb stairs to see if it rolls up your legs.
    • When trying on shapewear that sits at your waist, sit bend to see if the top rolls down. Sitting up straight will help prevent rolling so try not to slouch or bend from the waist, instead squat to pick things up. High-waisted items are less likely to roll.
    • Walk around to be sure the shapewear does NOT make a “swishy” noise when you walk or move around.
    • Continue walking moving to be sure your garment doesn’t cling, it should glide freely over the shapewear.
    • If you’re trying on briefs or a brief-bodysuit, check for VPL (visible panty lines)…a big no-no.
    • If you’re trying on a strapless bodysuit or slip, raise your arms wiggle around a bit to be sure the “girls” don’t pop out. And check your backside to be certain you don’t have lumps squeezing out at the top. If you do, consider other shapewear options or, dare I say, a different garment.
    • Shapewear tanks can be good for smoothing bra-bulge, just make sure the bottom doesn’t roll or ride up (try tucking the tank into your bottoms or underwear) and it doesn’t compress your bust too much (unless you want it to, of course).

I know it sounds ridiculous, but you’ve got to test this shapewear somehow! You don’t want to wait until the night of a special event to find out your shapewear is more of a hindrance that a help.

PLEASE NOTE — Shapewear is made of sturdy but delicate fabric. When putting on shapewear bottoms, do NOT pull them on from the top (waist) like a regular pair of shorts. Gather the material in your hands, slowly releasing the fabric as you pull them up gently, as you would a pair of stockings. Always step into a slip, tank or cami and gather the fabric the same way, slowly releasing as you pull it up. Gather fabric to shimmy down and step out to remove. Do not try to put it on or off over your head, you’ll thank me.

My Fav’s

My favorite shapewear happens to be by SPANX, I love their Thinstincts Girl Shorts ($52 at Nordstrom). Whether I’m wearing them under a casual dress or to smooth out my figure under something more formal and fitted, I find them comfortable enough to wear all day. In fact, I have a few pairs in nude and a couple in black so I always have a clean pair available.

The Thinstincts Girl Shorts are thick enough to hold me in but thin enough not to be noticeable under tight dresses. Plus, they’re not impossible to get in or out of, which keeps going to the ladies’ room from being a struggle. The inside of the legs have a non-slip silicone lining at the bottom of the shorts that keep them from sliding or rolling. The waist will occasionally roll if I really bend over at the waist but not enough to be problematic.

I also have a couple of the high-waisted shorts by SPANX. These don’t generally roll down since they sit above the waist, up by/under my bra. One pair has a non-slip lining around the back of the waist band but not around the bottom of the shorts, yet they do not roll.

I have few other shapewear bottoms by Yummie, Wacoal and others. I don’t own any shapewear tanks, bodysuits or slips, so I can’t give you my personal feedback on those. We’ll have to trust in what the experts and their testing recommend, see below.

Most Recommended Shapewear for Women

Everyone knows the brand SPANX. It has become a household name that is synonymous with shapewear…the same way we use Kleenex for a tissue or Band-Aid for an adhesive bandage. But there are a lot of brands out there so try a few to find your favorites.

Shapewear comes in variety of styles and colors, from thong underwear to full body armor. There are different levels of compression as well as items that target specific “problem” areas. Finding the right shapewear for your needs under a specific garment can be like looking for a needle in a haystack, see my Shapewear Shopping Tips.

What follows is a list of the best, most recommended shapewear for women in every category I could think of at the best price I could find as of this writing. Most categories feature two or more options to accommodate for different garments and/or body types. Feel free to jump to the category that interests you most using the links below…

BEST SHAPEWEAR SHORTS (REGULAR WAIST)

Shop SPANX Thinstincts Girl Shorts

SPANX Thinstincts Girl Shorts — $52 at Nordstrom

For a shorter short, this is my personal favorite. With a 4″ inseam, the shorts only come to mid-thigh. Comfortable enough for every day, these shorts target your tummy and slim your hips with a lightweight, breathable fabric. I love that they have a no-slip silicone lining around the leg band so they stay put. Available in nude and black.

If you prefer a longer inseam for additional slimming down your thighs, Thinstincts are also available in a mid-thigh short (1.0) for $58 at Amazon. For additional support, the Thinstincts 2.0 mid-thigh short offers more compression, $58 at Nordstrom. Available in nude, black and chestnut (brown).

Shop SKIMS Sheer Sculpt Low Back Short

SKIMS Sheer Sculpt Low Back Short — $44 at SKIMS

I’ve got to hand it to Kim Kardashian, not only did she create the ingenious Solution Short (see above), but she created a sculpting short with a low cut back! If only I’d known about these for my daughter’s prom dress (I sewed a V-shape into an existing pair of shapewear shorts to achieve this shapewear for her).

This mid-thigh short is perfect under clothing with a low back while still smoothing and sculpting your thighs and hips. Plus, it has soft stay boning at the side seams to prevent rolling, a no-slip silicone lining at the back waistband and an open gusset. These are brilliant, it’s no wonder they are currently sold out. I put my email on the waitlist! Available in 4 shades that match most skin tones.

BEST SHAPEWEAR CAPRIS & LEGGINGS

Spanx Footless Power Capri

SPANX Footless Power Capri — $26 at Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom & SPANX

These capris are really footless pantyhose with built-in control-top shorts that provide slimming compression from your waist down to your calves. Depending on what you’re wearing, the adjustable leg band can be placed anywhere between the knee and ankle. These are great under a dress or pants, available in black and nude.

If you need a little more all over smoothing, try SPANX Higher Power Capris (same capri, just high-waisted), $28 at Amazon & SPANX. Also available in black and nude.

Shop Body Wrap The Catwalk High-Waist Capri Shaper

Body Wrap The Catwalk High-Waist Capri Shaper — $52 at HerRoom

This high-waisted shaper will smooth your waistline, slenderize your things and flatten your tummy while bottom-enhancing panels lift and shape your derrière. A split crotch makes going to the restroom easy. Unlike the above capri that is made mostly from hosiery fabric, this capri is allover light compression with shaping panels. Available in nude at Amazon and in black and nude at HerRoom.

Shop SKIMS Sculpting Legging

SKIMS Sculpting Legging — $72 at SKIMS

If you need a shaping legging to wear under a slim maxi dress, pants or a jumpsuit, SKIMS Sculpting Leggings are the perfect layering piece. These seamless leggings will smooth your silhouette from your hips to your ankles, all while providing tummy control and lifting your butt. There’s a silicone grip on the back of the waistband to prevent rolling and an open gusset for nature calls. Available in nine shades to match every skin tone.

If you’re looking to accentuate your curves, these high-waisted briefs will control your tummy, cinch your waist and lift your butt. Not only do editors recommend these high-waisted briefs but they have a 4-star rating from almost 33,000 reviewers on Amazon. Nebility promises they won’t roll or slip down due to four flexible, lightweight steel bones in the bodice. Also available in a thong for $15 on Amazon. Both are available in black and nude.

Shop Maidenform Shapewear Firm Control Hi-Waist Brief

Maidenform Shapewear Firm Control Hi-Waist Brief — $22 on Amazon

These briefs were recommended on almost every list that included briefs. For tummy control without thigh coverage, this high-waisted brief targets your tummy, hips and back. The silicone elastic band promises to prevent it from rolling. Available in black and nude.

BEST BODYSUIT SHORTS SHAPEWEAR

Shop Spanx OnCore Mid-Thigh Bodysuit

SPANX OnCore Mid-Thigh Bodysuit — $98 at SPANX

Get a standing ovation in this OnCore (see what I did there) bodysuit. It’s lightweight yet powerful enough to flatten your tummy, enhance your booty and smooth your curves. The bodysuit has adjustable straps and a double-gusset opening for ease of use when nature calls. I like this one because it can be worn with or without a bra (depending on your bust and what you’re wearing it under). Reviewers on Amazon love it but, for some reason, the price is twice as much as on the SPANX site.

If you like this style but prefer an open bust so you can wear your own bra without an extra layer of material between you and your garment, try the OnCore Open-Bust Mid-Thigh Bodysuit ($98 at Nordstrom). Both styles are available in black and nude.

SPANX Suit Your Fancy Plunge Low-Back Bodysuit — $148 at Bloomingdale’s & SPANX

I love this bodysuit because it’s so versatile. Available in either shorts or a thong, this bodysuit will shape you under anything and everything…it works with low front and/or low back garments. The plunging U-front accommodates low necklines and the built-in bra is lightly padded for modest coverage. The back has 5-way convertible straps that can be worn traditionally, crisscross, halter, narrow back, and racerback. Plus, it comes with both matching AND clear straps and strap converter. Available in black and nude.

BEST BODYSUIT BRIEFS SHAPEWEAR

Shop Bali Lace ‘N Smooth Body Briefer

Bali Lace ‘N Smooth Body Briefer — $25 at Amazon

If you don’t want or need a mid-thigh short and just want a bodysuit to smooth your torso, this Bali bodysuit was recommended by several editors and has a 4.5-star rating from almost 6,000 reviewers on Amazon. The Body Briefer targets your tummy, waist and derrière all while looking sexy in a soft, smooth lacy body shaper with firm control. Plus, this affordable bodysuit has a built-in underwire bra (order by cup size), adjustable straps and a cotton-lined hook and eye gusset for convenience when nature calls. Available in black, white and “rosewood” (closest to nude).

Shop TC Fine Intimates Back Magic Strapless Bodybriefer

TC Fine Intimates Back Magic Convertible Bodybriefer — $89 at Bloomingdale’s & $63-$94 at Amazon depending on size

Going strapless? I got you. For extra firm control and an underwire bra that you order by cup size, this bodysuit-brief with detachable straps will smooth your back, midriff, tummy, waist, and hips. The TC Bodybriefer features flexible stays in the back for support, adjustable hook and eye back closure, silicone-coated elastic at the top to prevent sliding, silicone grips on the rear hem to keep it from riding up (no wedgies), hook and eye cotton gusset for nature calls, and detachable straps. Available in black and nude.

BEST SMOOTHING BRA SHAPEWEAR

Buy Shapeez Tankee Back-Smoothing Bra

Shapeez Tankee Back-Smoothing Bra — Several styles at the Amazon Shapeez Store starting at $81, or see the entire back-smoothing lineup and see the before and after pix at Shapeez.com

If your bra strap gives you back bulges, try this back-smoothing tank-style bra with adjustable straps. The Tankee is available in both short and long tanks as well as with a low-cut back or with full upper back coverage. According to the Good Housekeeping testers, “it was comfortable, supportive, and looked great under clothing.” One D-cup tester said, “it was the best fitting bra she’s every owned!” I’m not surprised after reading the Shapeez fit guide; their bras come in small, medium and large for each cup size. I wish every bra manufacturer did that! Available in black and nude.

Buy SPANX Bra-Llelujah! Full-Coverage Bra

SPANX Bra-Llelujah! Full-Coverage Bra — $68 at Bloomingdale’s & SPANX

Dig-free straps, front closure and an all hosiery-like back make this bra virtually invisible. There’s added strap support for sizes 36C+, but one reviewer did feel that the “girls” had a little too much bounce, while another found it so comfortable that she slept in it. In fact, style expert Lindsay Albanese told Today editors that the Bra-Llelujah! Bra is “the sweatpants of bras.” Available in 7 colors for every skin tone at SPANX, in black and nude only at Bloomies. Also available in a racerback in black and nude.

BEST BRA FOR A HALTER, ONE SHOULDER OR PLUNGING NECKLINE

These are not shapewear, per se, but they will help you get the best shape under garments with various necklines while still supporting your bust.

Buy SKIMS Fits Everybody One Shoulder Bralette

SKIMS Fits Everybody One Shoulder Bralette — $32 at SKIMS

Once again, SKIMS gets high marks in ingenuity. I love this one shoulder bralette with a single, adjustable strap over the right shoulder. It’s sleek and supportive in a buttery soft fabric that molds to your body. Plus, it comes in nine core colors for every skin tone as well as 3 pretty seasonal colors.

Maidenform Convertible Plunge Bra — $21-$45 at Amazon depending on color and size (regular and full figure), $44 at Nordstrom (full figure sizes only)

This convertible plunge bra is probably the most versatile bra around, I’m not surprised it’s recommended by so many editors. It comes with matching convertible, adjustable shoulder straps as well as a clear halter strap and a matching converter strap. The cups are designed to be worn to the sides of the breasts for the most plunging neckline, while the band below the cups sits on the rib cage for added support and adjustable straps help you get the perfect fit. Available in regular and full figure sizes in black and nude.

For those times you want zero straps, these adhesive backless, strapless bras will keep you in shape.

  1. NuBra Feather-Lite Adhesive Bra — $30-$50 on Amazon depending on size and color
    • My daughters and I are big fans of this adhesive bra, which I fondly call “sticky boobs.” I have them in both nude and black, and find them comfortable to wear. Keep in mind, this bra will keep the girls in place and give you shape, but not support. There’s a small learning curve to get them on evenly and with the right amount of cleavage. I prefer the style above, which has a nearly invisible seam around the cups, but there is also a seamless version that I have as well. Personally, I found, over time, the Feather-Lite holds its shape better. I keep my sticky boobs clean and the adhesive adhering by hand washing with Nubra Cleanser. The Feather-Lite is available in 4 shades to match most skin tones.
  2. Fashion Forms Ultimate Boost Backless Strapless Bra — $27-$38 on Amazon depending on size and color
    • When you want to go backless and strapless but need a little support, this backless bra has molded, lightly padded underwire contoured cups that adhere with silicone wings under the arms. Order by cup size, available in black, blush and nude.
  3. Fashion Forms U-Plunge Backless Strapless Bra — $27-$36 on Amazon for cup sizes A-D & sizes DD-H
    • Similar to the above but with a plunging neckline, this underwire bra also stays in place with silicone wings. Cup sizes A-D are available in black and nude, sizes DD-H are only available in nude.

BEST SHAPEWEAR TANK/CAMI

Shop Yummie 3-in-1 Shaping Cami

Yummie 3-in-1 Shaping Cami — $29 on final sale (reg $52) at Yummie or $52 at Bloomingdale’s

Yummie is best known for their tank tops and camis so different styles were recommended by different editors. I think this is the best, most versatile tank because it can be worn three different way and you know how I love multifunctional. The floating inner mesh panels can be arranged three different ways, as shown in the images above, for varying levels of compression where you need it most. This cami has adjustable straps, bonded edges that lay flat, non-slip grip tape at the side hem to prevent rolling, and is made of a smooth, lightweight fabric that clothes glide over. Available in black, nude and white.
