When the snow melts here in the Northeast, my favorite hiking trails end up blanketed in a sheet of ice. While warmer temps during the day start melting the snow, the cold nights freeze that melted snow, creating icy paths. To walk safely on ice, my friends and I wear crampons.
Crampons are stainless steel spikes in a macramé of chains affixed to a stretchy rubber base that slips onto the bottom of your shoes or boots in seconds. They really grip the icy trails & ensure we don’t lose our footing while walking.
I wear them on the trails but crampons are also great to feel safe street walking your dog when the roads are slick. My mother wears them to get her mail so she doesn’t worry about slipping on her driveway.
My friends and I love hiking year-round and crampons make that possible. In fact, I’m not sure who would be sadder if we didn’t hike in the snow, me or my dog Cosmo.
My next winter wear investment is snowshoes. For now, you can get a good deal on crampons. The ones I have are by CimKiz – I got them back in 2019 and they’ve held up great.
Pair your crampons with some hand and toe warmers (pix with links below), and you’re ready to go!
Happy Trails!
Hand & Toe Warmers
Not all warmers are considered equal. My 2 favorite, reliable brands are HotHands & Little Hotties.
Please remember to protect your pet’s paws in icy conditions by using pet-safe ice melt. Find out more here.
